Batman #671

I have said this many times this past year that I feel that this particular Batman Story arc with the resurrection of Ra’s Al Ghul is going to be my favorite storyline thus far. And this story has not disappointed me in anyway.

When we last left Bruce he was faced with a decision that he was to choose who would be the sacrifice for Ra’s Al Ghul’s new body so that he may live forever once more. Batman pulls a trump card and tells Ra’s that he will take him to the Fountain of Life. As he knows where this is located from when he purged his soul after Infinite Crisis. They trek their way through the snowy mountains to where the fountain is located and Batman takes out the world’s mightiest assassins to help Ra’s save his two sons. Upon arriving at the fountain they are met by the fountains keeper, who is later revealed to be Ra’s father. A battle ensues and Ra’s is defeated with one slice from his father’s sword. Batman then ensues into a great battle with Ra’s father and he for the first time gets his proverbial butt handed to him by the old man. Bruce lore’s him into a false sense of being the winner in the battle and takes him out once and for all, but not at the cost of his own life. The both fall into the fountain and this is the cause of Ra’s fathers’ demise as it burns him alive and revives Batman. In the process of all of this happening Ra’s Al Ghul does get his new body which is that of a body of one of the temples monks and tries to walk away before anyone is the wiser. But we are left with an angry hurting Bruce who wants answers.

Grant Morrison continues to write a masterful story for Batman and I’m so glad that DC has given him the reigns of this book. He knows the comic world so well and does such a great job getting the characters personalities that you feel that they are real people, if that makes any sense. Tony Daniel is and always will be one of my favorite artists, from his days on Backlash to Teen Titan’s, I’m glad one of the industries greatest talents is on one of the greatest books in the comic world.

All in all, this book was superbly done and I can’t wait to see what happens in the following story arcs. Especially the choice that Bruce will eventually have to make between Damian his biological son and Tim his adopted son.
